Developed by Kelly Kane, the Kane School certification is a rigorous training program combining the classic principles of Pilates with a modern, clinical perspective on the human body. Known world-wide for its anatomy-based approach, the Kane School program goes beyond choreography to explain why exercises work. Students not only learn classic Pilates repertoire, but also delve deeply into biomechanics, postural imbalances and common injuries.

CORE MUSCLE ANATOMY – March 16, 17 , and 23, 24 2019 (9a-5p)
This comprehensive course explores musculoskeletal anatomy and basic kinesiology principles—emphasizing the trunk, hip, shoulder girdle, arm, and neck—as they relate to the teaching and practice of Pilates, yoga, and bodywork. It lays the foundation for further study as a movement professional and is a prerequisite for the Kane School certification program. Taught by Susan Markowitz, a Kane School Graduate Teacher Trainer, PMA Certified Instructor and owner of Pivotal Pilates, this course is presented in a lecture-style format with workbooks and power-point presentations. Throughout the course, students gain hands-on experience via regular palpation of muscles, bones, and ligaments. Students also learn how to practically apply information taught in the course to their movement professional career via analysis of Pilates exercises and an introduction to posture analysis. Additional topics such as core stability and the anatomical basis of common tension patterns & injuries are also addressed. Students can test out of this course with a passing grade on the Kane School anatomy entrance exam.
COMPREHENSIVE PILATES MAT – April 13, 14 and 27, 28 2019 (10a-4p)
The Kane School Comprehensive Pilates Mat Training is a 65-hour advanced Pilates mat certification program that is singular in its attention to assessment, biomechanics and application of musculoskeletal anatomy to the human form. The primary objective of Kane School Comprehensive Mat certification is to empower instructors by providing them with the skills to facilitate their clients’ achievement of specific strength and flexibility goals, while maximizing dynamic alignment and movement potential. The Mechanics of Respiration, working in Neutral Pelvis and Posterior Pelvic Tilt, Core and Scapular Stability, Cervical Nod and Curl, and the Core Principles are covered in detail on the first weekend of the course. The second weekend of the Comprehensive Pilates Mat Training explores classical Pilates mat repertory, detailing the application of the Core Principles to each exercise. entrance requirements: •Either a passing grade on the anatomy entrance exam or completion of the Core Muscle Anatomy Course. requirements for completion: •10 hrs of Supervised Teaching •10 hrs of Self Practice •10 hrs of Group Mat Classes (offered at Pivotal; not included in tuition) •5 hrs Assistant Teaching Mat Classes taught at Kinected •3 hrs of teaching Community Classes • Passing grade on written exam, administered on last day of course.

Choreography & Cueing: It is primary to the Kane School philosophy of teacher training that in this first tier of learning, students stay true to the classic choreography and repertory. Kane School certifications teach the traditional basic, intermediate, and advanced exercise series on the Reformer, Cadillac, High Barrell and Wunda Chair, paying specific attention to verbal cueing for choreography and dynamics in movement. Students will work on session tempo and intensity, while learning how to integrate the Kane School Core Principles into a fitness style session.
BASIC TRAINING PHASE II – (9a-4p)

Touch: The Kane School is a pioneer in touch instruction for Pilates teachers. In this course, students will explore their manual perception skills through exercises and practical techniques. Over time, students will develop their own manual sonar, which will help detect fascial laxity and tension and asses healthy and not-so-healthy biomechanics. In this aspect of the course, students will also discuss and explore how to be truly present with themselves and their clients, while learning how to construct healthy boundaries to avoid “burning out.” The Twenty Touches will be presented as ways to manually guide people out of common habitual patterns like elevated shoulders, cervical hyperextension, and overactive quadriceps.

Biomechanics: Pilates is a great movement venue to maintain joint health. It is also a great venue to study basic joint biomechanics because much of the movement is uniplanar or biplanar, and the load can be adjusted easily from light to heavy. In this portion of the course, students will look at joint biomechanics from head to toe. Students will assess normal ranges of motion in each joint and develop visual skills to discern between normal and abnormal. Students will then present and discuss ways to facilitate flexibility where range of motion is lacking and strengthening where mobility is excessive.

Injuries & Special Populations: This portion of the course is designed to educate instructors on basic diagnoses and their contraindications, teaching students how to think about working with populations that require special consideration. Though not a rehab course, this workshop will give Kane School graduates the tools to make educated choices about special populations, teaching instructors how to create safe and enjoyable movement experiences for their clients.
December 7, 8 2019
Advanced Teaching Skills: The final aspect of the course, this one-day workshop focuses on how to assess a new client, set goals, and structure custom-made workouts. Intake procedures will be presented, and students will practice ways to dialogue with clients in order to set appropriate goals. From a physiological perspective, students will learn different components of an effective workout in order to target specific strength, flexibility, and overall fitness goals, while creating safe and engaging movement experiences that will challenge clients to progress and transform.
